Know whether a storage label is decimal or binary
Practical example
One GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes, while one GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. A drive sold in decimal gigabytes therefore appears with a smaller number when software reports binary gibibytes.
Interpreting the result
Use SI labels KB, MB and GB for powers of 1000 and IEC labels KiB, MiB and GiB for powers of 1024. State which convention a quota, transfer rate or capacity uses.
